Applicants for the School of Communications and Arts undergraduate courses should meet university entrance qualifications. The usual pathways to gaining these qualifications are as follows:
Tertiary Entrance Examination
Entry can be based on the Western Australian Tertiary Entrance Score or equivalent. The applicant must have achieved Secondary School Graduation with an adequate performance in English, English Literature or English as a Second Language.
Mature-Age Admission
Applicants aged 20 year or over before 1 March (or 1 August) in the semester of admission may gain admission by passing the Special Tertiary Admission Test (STAT). Admission may also be considered on the basis of a Tertiary Entrance Rank (TER) calculated from the average obtained in only two subjects taken as a mature-age student.
TAFE Qualifications
A TAFE Certificate IV or higher normally meets the minimum admission requirements of the University. Satisfactory completion of the first year of a relevant TAFE Diploma or Advanced Diploma course may also be considered. Graduates of a TAFE Diploma or Advanced Diploma course may be eligible for advanced standing in a related course.
Indigenous Student Admission
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants aged 18 years or over prior to 1 March (or 1 August) in the year of admission may gain entry to the School of Communications and Contemporary Arts by passing the Aboriginal Student Intake Test (ASIT). They will either gain direct entry or be advised to enrol in the Indigenous University Orientation Course (UOC). Both the ASIT and IUOC are conducted by the Kurongkurl Katitjin School of Indigenous Studies located on the ECU Mount Lawley Campus.
University Preparation Course
This is a one semester full time (available part time over twosemesters) course that prepares students for university level study by teaching the required skills for academic success. Designed for school leavers and mature age students, the completion of this course will meet ECU's minimum entry requirements. However, the entry requirement for any degree is determined by the number of places and the level of competition for entry to that degree.
Alternative Admission Requirements
Portfolio Entry
Portfolio applications involve assessment of applicants based on a portfolio of evidence showing an ability to succeed in higher education. They provide applicants with minimum entry requirements access to a comprehensive range of undergraduate courses.
Advanced Standing
The School values and recognises previous studies and will grant credit where equivalence can be established. Once the previous course has been evaluated, a student may be granted anywhere from one unit, up to a maximum of 16 units or four semesters (2 years) of advanced standing.
Second Semester Entry
Edith Cowan University courses normally commence in February and July of each year.
